Instagram DM Auto-Reply Tools Compared 2026: Free, ManyChat, Done-for-You
Meta's free tools already handle some of this, including auto-DMs for "comment +1" posts and DM auto-replies. When do you need a paid tool? How do ManyChat and Taiwanese vendors compare on price? Plus three rules that can get your account in trouble.

Once Instagram DMs and comments start piling up, two needs come up most often. Can you auto-reply when customers DM to ask about prices or opening hours? And if a post says "Comment +1 and we'll DM you the link," can that message go out automatically?
The answer is yes to both, and part of it Meta offers for free. This article covers what the free features can do, then compares paid tool pricing, and ends with three rules that can get your account in trouble.
Start free: Meta's built-in auto-replies
As long as your Instagram is aprofessional account(business or creator), you can set up these features in Meta Business Suite (Meta's official dashboard for Facebook Pages and Instagram) at no cost:
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Instant reply | Sends a welcome message automatically the first time a customer DMs you |
| FAQs | Shows a few preset question buttons in the chat that answer automatically when tapped |
| Keyword auto-reply | Sends a fixed reply when a DM contains specific words |
| Away message | Tells customers when you'll reply outside business hours |
| Comment-to-DM | Automatically DMs anyone whose comment contains a keyword |
Limits of the free features:
- Comment-to-DM supportsup to 5 keywords, matching is case-sensitive, and setup must be done on the desktop dashboard.
- Replies are fixed, so if a customer phrases a question differently, it won't be answered.
- No contact lists, no reports: you can't see who tapped what or whether they later bought.
- No booking, and no integration with your LINE customer data.
For shops getting fewer than 20–30 DMs a day with predictable questions, the free features are enough.
When the free features aren't enough
If any of the following applies, consider a paid tool or a custom build:
- You want different keywords, links, or discount codes for each post
- Customer questions vary widely and need AI to understand them before replying
- You want customers to book or leave their email right in the DM
- You want to know which posts drive the most DMs and how many end in sales
- You run Instagram, Facebook, and LINE together and want to connect each customer's conversations
Paid tool pricing compared
ManyChat (the most common internationally)
Since March 2026, pricing is based on "active contacts" (people who interact in a given month). Monthly equivalent with annual billing:
| Plan | Per month (annual billing, USD) | Active contacts included |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | About US$14 | 250 |
| Pro | About US$29 | 2,500 |
| Business | About US$69 | 7,500 |
| Advanced | About US$139 | 25,000 |
Monthly billing costs more, about US$17–199. It's full-featured with plenty of tutorials. The downsides: the interface is mostly in English, there's no LINE support, and costs climb as your active contacts grow.
We've used ManyChat ourselves, and honestly, it was painful. The English interface is a minor issue. The real obstacle is how flows are built: a single "comment for a link" campaign has to be pieced together from triggers, flow nodes, tags, and custom fields across several layers. If any step isn't connected properly, customers don't get the message, and it's hard to tell where things broke. For small teams without someone dedicated to the tool, figuring out the dashboard often takes more time than the campaign itself. That's one reason we ended up building our own system.
Taiwanese and Asian vendors (e.g., Omnichat, Crescendo Lab, SleekFlow)
Most support Instagram, Facebook, and LINE together, with Chinese interfaces and local support. Typical pricing:
- Entry: about NT$900–2,500/month
- Mid-tier: about NT$2,500–8,500/month
Plans and contract terms vary widely by vendor; you usually need a sales quote.
A gap in the market:None of the tools we looked at support auto-replies on Threads. That's because Threads' official API currently has no DM features; it only allows public replies to comments.
Three rules that can get your account in trouble
1. You can only message proactively within 24 hours.Within 24 hours of a customer's last DM, tools can reply freely; after that, automation can no longer send them messages proactively. Any "next-day follow-up reminder" has to go out within this window.
2. Comment-to-DM allows only one DM per comment. After someone comments, you can send them one DM, then you have to wait for them to reply before continuing the conversation. When designing the flow, make sure the first DM clearly delivers the key info (link, discount code).
3. Only use tools connected through the official API.Tools that ask for your Instagram password or use browser extensions to mimic manual actions violate Meta's terms and risk restrictions or suspension. Tactics like "follow to get the link" or mass DMs are also not recommended; they tend to get reported.
How to choose: first decide between "set it up yourself" and "have it built for you"
Functionally, ManyChat, Taiwanese vendors, and custom solutions can do much the same things: keyword comment-to-DM, different links and discount codes per post, comment giveaways, and AI replies. The real difference iswho sets it up and who maintains it:
| Self-serve tools (ManyChat, Taiwanese vendors) | Done-for-you (custom solution) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who builds the flows | You, in the dashboard | The vendor builds them for you |
| Pricing | Monthly fee, by contacts or plan tier | One-time setup fee + fixed monthly fee |
| Best for | Teams with time to learn the dashboard who like tweaking things themselves | Teams with no time to learn tools who want to go live right away |
| Data | Stored with the tool vendor | Can stay in your own hands |
- Few DMs, predictable questions → Meta's free features are enough.
- A social media manager willing to learn the dashboard and change flows anytime → ManyChat (English interface) or a Taiwanese vendor (Chinese, includes LINE).
- No one to set it up, and you want it built and looked after for you → Done-for-you.
FAQ
Can Instagram auto-reply to DMs? Does it cost money?
Yes, and the basic features are free. Switch Instagram to a professional account, then set up instant replies, FAQs, and keyword replies in Meta Business Suite.
How do I set up auto-DMs for "comment +1" on Instagram?
On the Meta Business Suite desktop dashboard, you can set up "auto-DM when a comment contains a keyword," with up to 5 keywords. For more keywords or different content per post, set it up yourself with ManyChat or a Taiwanese vendor's tool, or have someone build it for you.
Can personal accounts use auto-replies?
No. Auto-replies and third-party tools both require a professional account (business or creator). Switching is free and can be done in Instagram settings.
Will auto-reply tools get my account suspended?
Not if they connect through Meta's official API. The risk comes from tools that ask for your password or mimic manual actions, and from tactics like mass DMs and forced follows.
Is ManyChat available in Chinese?
The interface is mostly in English, but messages to customers can be written entirely in Chinese. If you're not comfortable with an English dashboard, choose a Taiwanese vendor's Chinese-language tool, or simply have it built for you so you never have to touch the dashboard.
Can Facebook Pages auto-reply too?
Yes. Meta Business Suite's auto-replies also support Facebook Messenger, and most paid tools manage Instagram and Facebook together.
Our approach
We take the done-for-you route: instead of selling you a dashboard to build flows yourself, we build the flows you need, launch them, and maintain them. Our own Instagram and Facebook run on this system:
- Keyword comment-to-DM, with different keywords and links for each post
- Comment giveaways and interactive quizzes
- AI reads and answers DMs, with booking right in the conversation
- One automatic reminder within 24 hours if a customer goes quiet
- If needed, customer data connected across Instagram, Facebook, and LINE
Each client uses their own Meta app, so data stays in the client's hands, and pricing isn't based on contact count. Basic auto-greeting setup is NT$9,000 with a NT$600 monthly fee; keyword campaigns are NT$1,500 each; giveaways and quizzes start at NT$5,000; AI replies and booking come in a full package. Prices are based on public information compiled in November 2026: ManyChat figures are the monthly average for annual billing on its website (in USD); Taiwanese vendor figures are price ranges from several vendors' public plans. Refer to each vendor's website and quotes for actual pricing.
