LINE Official Account auto-reply not enough? Check these 5 signals before you spend money

Auto-reply matches keywords word for word, so it goes silent the moment a customer phrases things differently. When it's not enough, the first step isn't hiring a developer. It's trying LINE's built-in AI chatbot for NT$100 a month. This article lists five signals to help you decide when even the built-in option falls short and you need something custom.

The short answer:When auto-reply isn't enough, the first step isn't hiring a developer. It's trying the AI chatbot built into LINE Official Account, for NT$100 a month.

Only if that falls short does custom make sense. If two or more of the five signals below apply to you, then consider paying for a build.

Why auto-reply falls short

LINE Official Account auto-reply is akeyword lookup table: if you set "business hours," the customer has to type "business hours" to get a reply.

A customer types "What time do you usually close?" and not a single word matches, so the bot stays silent. You add another keyword, "what time," then "close," then "closing"… A few months later you have dozens of keyword sets in the back end, and customers still find ways to ask that you never set up.

It's not that you didn't set it up carefully enough. That's simply all this tool can do.

Try the built-in option first: LINE AI chatbot

The LINE Official Account back end now includes an "AI chatbot." Upload your product information or FAQs (price lists, menus, business hours and the like), and it understands how customers phrase their questions before answering. No coding, and no external systems to connect.

The conditions are listed in LINE's official help pages:

  • Requires theChat Advanced add-on, NT$100 per month
  • Currently inbeta, with a monthly reply cap; LINE recommends it for accounts with fewer than 25,000 friends
  • May not be available for healthcare, finance, religious organizations, government agencies, or legal services

If you run a restaurant, retail shop, or beauty business, most customer questions are about hours, prices, location, and availability, soturn this on and try it for a month. At NT$100, it's cheaper than any development quote.

Five signals that the built-in option isn't enough

Signal 1: Answers require real-time data

"Any openings Saturday afternoon?" "Has the order I placed last week shipped yet?" "Do you still have this in a medium?"

The answers to these aren't in an FAQ. They live in your booking calendar, order system, or inventory, and they change by the minute. Uploading a document won't solve it; you need code that looks things up.

Signal 2: Answers depend on your rules

"I bought it ten days ago and opened it. Can I still return it?" "Two adults and one child: which package should we book?"

The answer isn't a single line to look up. It has to be calculated from your return policy or pricing rules. The more detailed the rules, the more you need that logic written into code instead of leaving the AI to guess.

Signal 3: You need handoff to a human, with the conversation history

There will always be times the AI can't answer, or the customer simply wants a person. The bot needs to step back and hand the chat to you, andyou need to see what the customer already asked, or they'll have to start over.

LINE's official documentation for the built-in AI chatbot doesn't mention a human handoff flow. If handoff matters to your business, confirm this first.

Signal 4: Your industry is excluded

For clinics, medical aesthetics, insurance, law firms and similar businesses, LINE states the built-in AI chatbot may not be available. That leaves only keyword replies or a custom build.

Signal 5: Your website needs a support agent that answers too

Customers don't only ask on LINE; they ask on your website as well. Run two separate setups and every update has to be made in two places. Sooner or later, one side goes stale.

The custom approach isone knowledge base shared by LINE and your website, so a single update refreshes both.

When you don't need us

  • Fewer than ten types of questions, all with fixed answers:keyword replies plus a rich menu are enough. Turn common questions into menu buttons customers can tap
  • More questions, but all simple lookups with no judgment calls:turn on LINE's built-in AI chatbot
  • Only a few hundred friends and fewer than ten messages a day:replying yourself is fastest. The time a bot saves isn't worth the development cost

In these cases, hiring a developer won't get you much for the money.

A real example

We built LINE customer service for an e-bike rental shop. Staff spend all day tending bikes at the store with no time to answer LINE, and customers always ask the same few things: prices, models, whether the bikes are street-legal, and how to book. Wait too long, and customers leave.

It hit Signal 1 and Signal 3: bookings require real-time data, and questions that truly need staff have to be handed off, with staff able to see what the customer already asked. Now the AI answers the common questions directly, and when a person is needed, it hands off to staff along with the conversation so far.

You can add the LINE account @141bhpwa and try it yourself.

Xiao Ai, the AI assistant on our own website, works the same way. Over the past 90 days it answered 81 messages, and about 35% of those were "I'm not sure about this, let me get you a human"— if it can't find the answer, it doesn't guess. That's by design. (Figures include our own test conversations.)

FAQ

Can auto-reply and the AI chatbot run at the same time? The LINE back end lets you set a response mode; refer to the LINE Official Account back end and help pages for details. In practice, we suggest turning your most common questions into rich menu buttons first, then letting the AI handle typed messages.

With the AI chatbot on, will customers think they're talking to a person? We suggest saying it upfront in your welcome message: "This is an automated reply. To reach a person, tap the button below." In our experience, when customers know from the start that it's a bot, they're actually more forgiving when it can't answer.

How much does a custom build cost per month? Three parts: the LINE plan fee, paid directly to LINE; AI usage, billed by message volume (with a hard cap built into the system); and optional maintenance. The full breakdown is in How much does a LINE bot cost? .
